To choose a China furniture supplier, start from what you buy: catalogue models, customised models or your own designs. Then check each factory before paying: legal identity, real production of your type of furniture, capacity for your container plan and test reports matched to your exact product. Most problems we see with furniture are not scams. They come from vague specifications, communication gaps, weak packing and poorly planned containers. A detailed specification, an approved sample, an inspection of every production and supervised loading prevent most of them. Check the rules of your market, such as fire safety for hotel projects, before choosing foams and fabrics.

Catalogue, customised or your own design?
The right supplier depends on how you buy. A factory that is excellent at catalogue sofas may be the wrong partner to develop a new hotel chair.

Where to find furniture factories in China
- Furniture fairs. CIFF in Guangzhou (March) and Furniture China in Shanghai (September) are the main dedicated fairs. The Canton Fair also has a large furniture section in its second phase. Check dates on the official sites.
- Foshan. Near Guangzhou, the permanent furniture markets of Foshan (Lecong, Louvre) let you see many products in a few days.
- Platforms. Alibaba, Made-in-China or Global Sources help map the market, but a listing says little about who produces.
Our tips from the fairs: prepare appointments before you travel, and keep a day or two after the show to visit the factories you spotted. Many exhibitors are factories, but some are trading companies with no production of their own. A booth shows a showroom, not a production line. How to check a China furniture supplier
In a sourcing study, we contact many factories and shortlist three to five, more when possible. Many do not pass our checks. Here is what we look at.

What really goes wrong with furniture from China
A Caribbean home furnishings retailer bought furniture in China on its own. Its supplier was hard to reach and slow to answer, and the two sides did not really understand each other. It first asked us for a single inspection. Several years later, we manage several of its orders, check its suppliers and organise its shipping, for sofas, outdoor furniture, shop fittings and kitchen equipment. Read the case.
That case is typical. The issues we see most often are:
- Vague orders. Wrong size, finish or quantity, with no easy fix once the container has left.
- Communication gaps. Language, culture and time zones. A local team on site clears things up much faster than emails.
- Good sample, different production. The approved sample must stay the reference for the inspection.
- Packing that does not survive the trip. Furniture travels for weeks, often through humid climates.
- Half-empty containers. Furniture is bulky, so freight cost per piece depends on how well the container is filled.
Write a specification the factory cannot misread
- Dimensions with tolerances.
- Materials: wood species, frame material, foam density, fabric reference.
- Colours and finishes, with physical references when possible.
- Hardware, assembly instructions, labels and marking.
- Packing: export cartons, corner and edge protection, protection of finished surfaces, carton marking.
Then approve a pre-production sample and keep it as the standard for production.
Compliance: check your market before you order
Rules depend on the destination market and on the use of the furniture. In the EU, furniture has no CE marking. It falls under general product safety (stability, strength, instructions) and REACH for chemicals. Fire safety for upholstered furniture is not harmonised in the EU: several countries have national rules, and hotel, restaurant and public-building projects usually have stricter requirements. Depending on the market, also check formaldehyde emissions from wood panels, timber legality and the treatment of solid wood.
Confirm the requirements for each country and project before choosing foams and fabrics, not after production. Inspection, packing and loading
We inspect every production we follow. Our default plan is ISO 2859-1 Level II, with 0 critical, AQL 2.5 major and AQL 4.0 minor. For furniture, the inspection covers:
- quantities, measurements against the specification, marking and packing;
- workmanship: joints, stitching, scratches, paint and varnish;
- stability, load and function tests, and assembly with the supplied hardware;
- carton drop tests, to see if the packing will survive handling.
For large or new orders, a during-production inspection catches problems earlier. At loading, plan the container from carton dimensions, consider knock-down designs when they suit the product, supervise the loading and record the seal number. Buying from several factories? How do I find a reliable China furniture supplier?
Start with a precise specification, then use fairs, Foshan’s markets and platforms to build a long list. Shortlist factories specialised in your type of furniture, check their legal identity and capacity, audit them and approve samples before ordering.
Can I combine furniture from several factories in one container?
Yes. It lowers freight cost and simplifies customs clearance, but production dates, inspections and deliveries to the loading point must be coordinated. Our order management and shipping teams handle this.
